Andover WECAN Joins in North Andover Climate Rally
Mary, Bob and Kate represented Andover WECAN at a Climate Rally organized by Mass Power Forward on Monday. The North Andover event was one of 11 events held across the state to push the state Legislature to adopt strong climate bills.
The rally was held at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the month to symbolize the urgency with which the legislature must act before the current legislative session concludes at the end of the month.
Senator Bruce Tarr, who represents much of North Andover, is one of three senators on the 6-member Conference Committee. The Conference Committee reconciles the differences between the House and Senate proposals for the state budget to the governor. There are many differences in the environmental bills between the House and the Senate. Mass Power Forward and the activists are pushing for bills that support transitioning the state to clean electricity, heating and transportation and address environmental justice.
Andover WECAN together with about 40 folks from Groundwork Lawrence, Climate Justice Group from North Parish Church, 350 Mass, and others, held signs around the rotary in North Andover near the town green. Many cars honked, waved and gave a thumbs up. One motorist even stopped and parked his new Ford Lightning for the group to check out. The group chanted:
“Fossil fuel or fossil free,
Think about your legacy!”
and
“Can’t eat money
Can’t drink soil.
Leave the carbon in the soil!”
The group followed with a twitter storm to the 6 legislatures on the Conference Committee exhorting that “no climate bill” is not an option.
